Thanks for the thread Greg.

I'm doin some different stuff of course.....keep learnin new things and workin on the style.  I'm trying to capture more of the character in the pencil line nowadays....the pieces look less computery and they do have more character.  It's the reason Bugs Bunny cartoons are the best IMO.  Anyway....no real lineart, and much more like painting.

Here's a couple more steps.

This is underpainting stuff.  Just set up my canvas and introduce some variation.

next I'll block in some color and then set up my layer masks.

All pencil then photoshop

more tonite.

questions?

I didn't forgetcha just got buried between work and a hard place.

In any case lets see what happened

I blocked in some more tones and started working up the tires a bit.

Then I added a light layer and some more indications.  I jumped into the wheels started to plan it out some.

I did some glass tweaks and roughed in some chrome, but I realized I wasn't feelin t like I wanted to.  I did a little research and landed on to a few tutorials on http://www.ctrlpaint.com  and picked up a couple workflow tips.  I wanted to paint through the shapes so my strokes would be more confident and have that, I don't know "it"...so....I started the whole render over.  It was tough but if you're goin down a path that doesn't feel right, change paths.

So...I roughed in some body color.  I was able to make selections on throw away layers using clipping masks and grouping masks which allowed me to paint through the shape and then just erase out what I didn't want.

The eraser in Photoshop is amazing actually.  It has an edge control to it that makes it work almost better than the brushes.  I don't know how they do it...I just know the sound it makes when it erases. (yeah...tropic Thunder was on last nite.)  anyway..

Still blocking in color, did the tire tone and tread real quick.  I follow a basic procedure on that...I like to base the sidewall and the tread with different colors cause I think it's cool how the tread looks like it's wrapped around like a dirty dirty latex glove.  LOLOL  anyway....I need to shower.

The color for the glass is always interesting.  I was gonna go orangey but the warm warm body color on this car meant I should probably go with something on the cool side in the glass.  I was toying with purpley cause I'm black, but I settled on blue cause I didn't want the competing red in the purple.  At this point, I really started diggin this.

Blocked in the top and started in on the rims.  Detailed rims are always hard to pull off cause you have blacks in the openings of the wheel already and then you need to add a black on the face of the rim, but make it look like a different material.  The hilites are what help sell the look.  The style of rendering I'm doing with this gives me a little play as it's looseness is part of what helps character retention so I was pleased with where this started goin.

Here I got the blues and hot spots and wheel well shadows put in.  Note to car art cats...wheel well shadows are crucial.  I noticed hot shots like Brian Stupski and Scott Fisk and countless others, always include them.  This is what sinks the wheels under and sets the body on the frame.  If you forget it, your piece though good is gonna have that missing thing...now...I still may have that missing thing, but it wont be that.  LOLOL!

Here's a look at one of my path layers.  I will use these to make selections where appropriate.  Each path is created with the pen tool.  You can then make selections and even intersect and other path operations to refine your selections and give you specific areas to paint in.

If you have ever airbrushed, this is the Photoshop equivalent of frisket film.  By adding subtracting, intersecting and duplicating then transforming paths, you can do some pretty cool stuff. I have a friend named Jeremy Duncan who is easily one of the best in the field that showed me some stuff with this, but my daughter Alix really broke it down for me.  Great method.

So...after using my paths to define my light and shadow areas, I was able to just dance around the car with a paint brush and work to bring areas to life.

Once again, it's still not done as I have to erase and do some nose work and a couple other things.  I received a note from ESPI and Greg so I moved the tailights down by doing a shift+ctrl+c and copying through all layers and then pasting the taillights on a new layer and moving them into position.  Then I just re-rendered the colors under them and cut in new hilites.  It was easier to do it there than going back to formula so to speak.

Here's where it's sitting now.

I made a play file just to goof off with and try stuff.  There's another car in this design so I'm gonna start on that then tweak this into place before integration.

Very very fun piece to work on.  It's nice to be here with it.

I will update this thread soon.

Thanks

I appreciate all the work you're putting in.

Tail lights are in the right spot, now. Just need to be smaller.
Circles instead of ovals.

Plate light housing needs to be longer / taller as well.

A few different perspectives.

I am picky, you know this... that's why it works so well.

It looks a little Oval-ish right now.

I like feedback from others as well. I don't want this to be a Salesforce deal when it's all done and someone points out "that should have been grey, not blue"

Title: Re: 2012 Vintage Warehouse gear
Post by: themacnut on May 20, 2012, 08:18:56 PM
Really like it.

Agree on the tail light size.  Smaller and rounder.  Side mirror also looks too big.  But just being picky.

Bumper is amazing.  I also really like the vents.  Now if someone would make a split decklid with vents that match this rendering, we would be golden.

Title: Re: 2012 Vintage Warehouse gear
Post by: lemorris on May 21, 2012, 05:10:11 PM
Thanks for the input.  Like I said, I'll re-visit before integration and do what I can.  My toon style doesn't always carry a lot of realism as character and exaggeration are what makes it a cartoon.  I will take some more cues from the more realistic rendering I did and then apply.

That will come in a bit, I'm working up the other car to a similar point so I can get it all synced then I'll put some polish on it.

It's ok to be picky, I'll try my best but try not to work on it forever.  I'm still learnin, but it's goin well.  I'm glad I started that render over.

Here's a look at the base on the 356.  White cars are hard, bbut I like where this one is sayin it wants to go.  I'll do some things like put a glass color that matches the other car and try to tie them together in tone and style.  I'm really not much of a realist, I like the term feelist.  LOLOL  I get better by Greg though so I'm pretty pleased in general.

thanks for lookin

Thanks man, much appreciated.

Here's a little more on the 356

Still blocking in but playin with first level detail.  Yes that sounds dirty (not really) but basically I'm adding some bits and letting it tell me where it wants to go.  In the second pic I pushed back the pencil a bit so I could see how the tones played out.  It helps me guage where I need to boost or push back in future stages.  It also lets me get a sneek peek at things like rim tones without the noise in the way.

I was looking for the moment that gave me that "ooo!...there it is!"  I think it just happened.  (clean up...aisle 4)  :)

Hey fellas

Hope everyone had a great holiday.

I turned a year older and got to ride in car camera with marco Andretti...what a whiney b_tch!  "I need more downforce!...I asked for more downforce 3 times already! This neck thing is too chaffey....I don't wanna take a nap!"  :)  it was fun.

anyway, I did get a chance to get back after this a bit.

I went in and added some of the detail and then did a clean up in my line layer.  This helps the rendering under it start to emerge.

I also ran a little bit of a warm color near my cool grey tones on the side.  This is an old old painter technique.  Its' similar to what the call a "chroma bump", I do it cause a white car is never just white.  It's actually a hard color to render, but little things like the chroma bump really help sell it.

I messed with the background some more just to see how it acts in different environments and it's pretty cool.  the window tint is still shifting, but once its in the design, we'll lock it down

fun car

Just to be clear.

You're cool with the style of the lettering, but the green is not floating your boat.  Correct?

I can do another lettering style too.  I like how it flows across and naturally opens up the center of the cross.

I like Vintage Warehouse in one line, but we can try a stack too.

Mike says - "Real Deal"
I say - "5450"

A box of garments arrived today for me to test and try before ordering.
Sounds like we'll be going to print next Friday, so plenty of time to get set before Kelley Park.

I plan on doing black only short, long, and hoodies.

*If* the colors work and the printers are cool with it, I'll try do have grey or ?? printed, but don't count on it...

Post up your wants so I can make sure to get people covered.

My guess at pricing will be $20, $30, $40.
2X - 4X will run $5 more
I can get *really* nice hoodies for $50

I'm going to do a "pre-sale" once I *know* they are being printed, and offer free shipping on those purchases.

You guys are wearing tank tops and shorts I'd guess...
As for the red shirt. I had an extra medium, and figured that was a good home for it.

You have to earn your red shirt just like earning a back window.
Applications are taken the first Tuesday of every month must be
filled out with a No.2 pencil.

Sincerely

Damn, I go to the shop and Mike lays it down like it's 1989 and were cruising mini trucks on Mendocino Ave.

What was it, 3 - 4 meetings and at least 3 club events before you got the window?

It's his retaliation for all my workout comments on FB.  LOL.

All I'm sayin' is he better be huge when I see him next time.  Olive Garden showed me he was posting more then he was lifting.

In all seriousness.

I have had a lot of interest in the grey and red shirts.

Problem is making a small (under 250) order increases the price quite a bit.
