3" narrowed adjustable beam, dropped spindles, straight axle, raised steering box, raised center pin, tie rods flipped on the swing lever, notched frame rails. I'm *guessing* the spring plates are set up between 3.5 and 4.5 degrees, but it's been so lomng I don't really know. I did this one before I started taking notes on every drop job for future reference. Wheels are 4.5 and 5.5 Sprint Stars with 195/55/15's on the rear and 165/45/15's on the front. In it's current state "The Smoker" as we call it is just about perfect. Rides nice, plenty of power with the 2110 and 44's. However is does smoke like nobody's business... Once I get the room in my shop, and the time, I'm going to tear the engine down. My plan is to add some slip in 94's ( http://lowbugget.com/pistonpage.html) to bump it up to a 2276cc, swap the 44's out for a set of IDA's put the magneto that I've had sitting in my shop finally in an engine, and do a Porsche center shroud set up. With more cc's and HP I figure the "junkyard" tranny in it now should come out too. With that in mind I bought a used Rancho Pro Street tranny from my buddy Steve. When it's all said and done it should be MUCH more fun to drive. I'll post up pics here when the work gets going.

Sure, go to your buddy for the trans. Build the engine your self. I aint mad... I wouldnt want to help anyway... ;) I'm guessin, they must have stopped making pallets & then Fed-Ex & UPS must have stopped shipping to Colorado. Make sure to set the ring end gap on the new top end. I would. I know you build your own stuff, but let me help the smoker get smokin'. Im vet @ this whole smokin thing by now! Call me, I'll hook U up! U buy the parts, Ill put it together & do the heads up all sweet.

The trans came out of my buddies bug. He was running a 2007 cc but stepped up to a 2387 FI Turbo :o so he needed a bigger trans. I got his pro street trans for $300 minus the short axles / tubes so I can't complain. You got a deal on the heads though. I need mine cut for 94's and the valves done up sweet. You're the man for the job.
Once I tear it down you'll be getting a call.

Wow 2 years have gone by.... I pulled the smoker out of hibernation today for this first drive since July 2009... I really miss driving this thing on a daily basis so I'm finally going to do the "upgrades" mentioned above plus a few others I've thought of. Steve's old prostreet trans is on the stand right now, HD axles just arrived today so I'll get it together next week and then all the current engine / trans will come out. I'm over the Porsche fan shroud, but may still run the magneto, just because, do a valve job and open up the heads as well then put it all back together. No time frame as I'll be working on it when there are no customer cars in my shop.

Different wheels, bigger engine, no more smoke, and a better geared tranny will make it even better. Not to mention new door seals and something to keep the "flap" from squeaking / banging while driving. I'll be ready for a *real* road trip in it pretty soon!!

This is what I'm looking to do. Since the bus rides so nice as is I wasn't planning on doing the new hybrid spindles, instead a new twist on the old way. Spacers and caliper mounts, only I needed to do a Wilwood mount instead of 944 (this is about the time my camera took a dump, so the rest are poor quality phone pics ) I did a quick mock up on a "regular" dropped spindle to make sure things would fit before taking my bus apart. Things look good. When I get home from AZ. I'll fit them to the bus. I think those ears need to go Max....... Here's a couple without the rear of the rim for a better idea of what's going on. Rears are no brainer. I'm running T3 brakes now, so I'll swap the wide 5 lug out for a set of Porsche drilled 4 lug units. Done deal!

With a wrong year front disk kit purchased by a customer (see here for front end differences... http://lowbus.com/BB/index.php?topic=801.0 ) I have found some time to get on with the install this week. In the meantime another hybrid set up is ready to go out!

Got my wheels together before lunch today. Working on the disk conversion right now. If all goes well (no leaks on the tires) I'll be on the ground tonight. I plan on running 165/50's but I donated my set to the Hostile 15 window so I'm temporarily using the 165/45's that were on the Salesflap. With 2 pc wheels swapping tires is pretty easy. Here's a quick how to.... Here's what you need. 2 pc wheel, tire, tube, WD-40, blunt tool, impact gun, tire filler, hemostats Tube into tire, add a little air to fill it out. Fit the front of the wheel, hold the valve stem with the hemostats. Lube the tube Fit the rear 1/2 of the wheel using the blunt tool to keep the tube from being pinched. Use an impact to torque the nuts down to MAXIMUM pressure Not really! I actually worked my way up to 50 ft/lbs with my torque wrench. If I get no leaks I'll pull the nuts off one at a time for some lock-tite then get them on the spin balancer.

why couldn't you use a sealant on the flat parts when bolting it together and a bead of sealant around the joint on the inside of the rim like a they do for 3 piece wheels?

More info on that please. I'm not a BIG fan of running tubes, but anyone I talked to told me that was the way to go with these.

Caliper mount on When doing a Porsche conversion without hybrid spindles the grease cap need to be made "taller" to fit the stock bus spindle. Here''s a before shot I made this tool to press the caps to the needed height After shot I found out the hard way if you stretch the drivers side (with speedo cable hole you end up witha hole that is too big for the cable. So instead I use passenger side caps and then drill / square file after they are stretched Rotor / hub assembled. Rotor painted black to avoid rust issues down the road. Spacers installed, bearings greased and set in, jam nuts set and lock tabs bent. Stretched cap with new speedo cable hole. Caliper mounted, speedo cable clip installed. ready for a bleed and then mount the wheels

With the front done I've decided to go with adapters in the back instead of switching to Porsche pattern T3 drums. This will push the wheel out farther and fill up the wheel well. When my rear tubes get here next week I'll get on that. Until then, this is all I have..... Red stripe, Red caliper........... what?? Yeah all the pictures are from one side. It was pouring here today so I rolled it out, took these pics and rolled it back in. More sun when I have 4 matching wheels, and some sun....
