Very cool pictures and story. I really enjoyed it. Here are a few quotes that resonate with me, and pieces of the story I enjoyed. "I was getting a strange feeling" This is where it starts right? Sometimes this happens over time, sometimes it happens today and the deal is done today! "I have found that as I grow older, my ambition to tackle Herculean projects is waning. I've earned my "mega-resto" badge, time to move on" Yep. Days I have this feeling quite a bit. But then there is the standard you want it built to. So.... Loved the spouse pitch, negotiation process. We all have somebody that is somewhat involved in the decision, some more then others. Again a fun read. "Well Ok. As long as you sell your '57 first." Oh boy. I am in the thick on this one right now. "RE: '50 Sunroof search". The seller says, "Add $1000 to your offer for shipping and you can have it." I just stared at the screen for a good minute. I felt my heartbeat increase a good 20%. Be careful what you offer, the seller just might make the deal. I think I have a few cars at home that happened that way. The thrill of the chase....

Has the super 25 hp been finished?
He's been busy doing this sort of thing lately... Was supposed to get it before the Classic, then at The Classic, now I'm not sure. I have a feature waiting once the engine is in, so I'm going to get going on the trans swap this month so that it's done.

Yeah that wheel is nice. I'll be putting it in this week sometime. I have an off week at the shop where I am building a bunch of suspension pieces, but no cars in for work, so I am going to bring in the 11G and tear into the running gear and fix a few things I never had time to do during the 24 hour marathon drop session (another reason faster isn't always better)
On the list:
Bus master cylinder (more stopping power) New steering box Late model Bug rear brakes with 5x130 pattern Turn the front drums (I think they got a little wonky when powder coated) 356 trans New starter
I'll do some other small work as well, brake hoses, shocks, etc. Nothing will look different when I am done, but hopefully it'll be a more pleasant driving experience with better braking, syncro shifting, and tighter steering.

Always learning... Split windows do NOT come with a bowden tube. So I'll need to fab a body side mount so I can add one to use with the 356 trans. Here's what I am working with, stock... Clutch / acc / choke are all recessed inside this larger oval shaped hole. With no bowden tube, the clutch cable will rub on the larger nose cone / gear cluster Examples of a 356 trans in a Split This shows how much curve is needed to get around the trans.

Bowden tube issue sorted today/ I also made 2 other sleves for the choke and acc. cable to slide through and hopefully keep them from getting caught up in that area. Other good news... removed the drives side spring plate that was already installed. Removed the drivers side fender, put a long steel drift in the torsion housing and beat the passenger side torsion bar out. Tomorrow should be a day of re-assembly with hopefully no more hang-ups.

One thing leads to another thing, which leads to yet another thing.... While assembling the new rear brakes I ran into a few stumbling blocks. Long studs needed in the adapter to clear the wheels and polished 356 drum Studs in the drum needed to be shortened so they would not interfere with the 356 drum once installed Adapters are hubcentric, so they center hub needed to be machined off so as not to interfere with the 356 drums. Finally got that all sorted today. I'll try assembly again tomorrow. It's very time consuming doing out of the box stuff for the first time. Without a huge machine shop on hand, every time I need a tool I don't (a lathe for example) I head across town to my buddy Bryan's shop. All of that takes time. Also under "this just in" news. 1.25 Speedwell rockers arrived this week. They are supposed to go on the Super 25hp, but I grabbed 2 sets so I could run a set on the stock engine as well for reference. I've been told the 1.25's with a performance grind cam can be "too radical". My response was, "I hope so!" I hear 1.4's will be available soon also. If I these 1.25's work well on my stock engine I may buy a set of the bigger ones for it so it has the "too radical" fell as well. Final thought - If you are planning on doing a *real* Vintage Speed engine (not a bolt on WW Okrasa kit) plan on spending WAY more than you set aside, and triple your build time. Aside from the new parts supplied by Ray at Speedwell (when you can get them), nothing is off the shelf and ready to go. This has been a 2+ year engine in the works. Most of that time was spent waiting for parts to be made or found.

Pre fuel pump replacement shot... I have word that my 1.4 Speedwell rockers will be here next week,so I put the engine on the test stand so I could run it after the swap *before* putting it back in the car. *Massive* cam sounds from a 25hp in the future.

Being that I am changing everything else I figured stainless lines (front and back) would be nice, and I'm going to run a Porsche master as well for no reason other than I can. I *thought* it was going to be a bigger bore at 19mm instead of 17mm, but doing some research I found in 1950 the bore changed to 19mm already. All of this started so I could run this 1952 Porsche 519 trans. Same smooth look but in full syncro, and maybe better gearing, (maybe worse)

Early axle end castings (pre 53) are different then later ones and use a different bearing cap. Most people don't know this and that's why their axle seals leak... Notice the lip See how it fits * inside* the backing plate. Later caps are angle cut for the rubber seal and do not slip into the backing plate and do not meet up with the end casting, so they leak... and like G.I. Joe says, "Now You Know!"
