Phil called me a couple weeks ago looking for the Slam-O-Matic special for his SC. I got the bus picked up and delivered here last Friday and plan on getting it under way this week.

I wanted to wait until I had ALL the pieces on hand and no other jobs taking my attention. that way I could knock it out in a timely manner.

dropped spindles
new front wheel bearings and misc. brake parts (just in case)
drum to drum trans with SA kit and thing brakes
tie rods
trans mounts and early nose cone adapter

The only thing I don't have are tires. Phil and I went over that yesterday and I believe we have a decision. They will be here shortly.

Pics?
Yeah, later.

Here's what we started with. Running driving Single Cab.
No known issues or surprises.

I *really* like to have ALL my pieces ready before going into a job to make things easier / faster. So here's 80% of "the stuff"

New trans with SA kit installed, notched spring plates, spindles, tie rods, rear shocks, new nose cone and adapter, new rear brakes, and front tires.

Having done this once or twice before  wink I know there are some issues I need to address so things go smoothly. The main ones being the front trans mount so I handled that first.

Before

After

A little "machining' is needed to get the clearance needed for the new nose cones. Once I am out of stock on these I may make the new ones a little different. But until them a couple minutes with an angle grinder does the trick.

Next up the nose cone.
Again this is something new I've run into with new nose cones.

Before

After some welding and a trip through the mill

Now there are no issues with clearance when bolting to the bus. Bolt is for reference. There is actually a stud and nut that goes there.

Last night I knocked out the front.
I added some stock 15" bus wheels in place of the bug ones, and threw on some hubcaps to get a better overall picture.

Dropped spindles with 175/55/15's. Nothing more. That makes for a very nice daily driver.
The SC already had new brakes / bearings so things went together smoothly. New spindles, tie rods, KYB gas shocks, wheels and tires.
Drag link, steering box, steering dampener, and center pin all looked good so I left them alone.

Phil likes it, and asked for just a bit of rake out of the rear to go with it.

Engine and trans out last night (nothing picture worthy there)
Tires being mounted today.

I'm heading out early today for a long weekend so Monday I'll start the install on the rear.

Yeah, I guess it's "old school". It's the way I've always done them. I figure if you're swapping the trans, might as well make sure it's good. So Rancho rebuilds them for me and I supply the straight axl kits for them to install while they are there.

Solid boots
Warranteed trans
No surprises
No goofy looking stacked plates

Just seems right to me.

Back to Phil's SC. My "just lower it a bit" meter is definitely broken... When I rolled the single cab out this afternoon.....WHOA! It's got quite  bit of rake, to the back!

Pain in the butt readjusting the rear with the brakes, etc. so I attacked that tonight instead of putting the engine in to give myself more room. Looks better ow, but a roll outside in the daylight is the only true measure.

In the meantime here's a few shots of the small things I saw.

When I first looked under the SC there was a tunnel trans and later front mount so I thought, "must be a *real* late '59" I later found out it had a sweet conversion mount for the front.

There's actually supposed to be a cup here to hold the doughnut for the stock trans.

I went with my mount instead.

I use these allen heads to make tightening the mount to the nose cone a little (a lot actually) easier

I tried to outsmart myself and ended up doing exactly that.

Using all my math, angle finders, protractors, etc. I thought this would be a good match for the front. After looking at it again with the trans in I knew that was wrong so I moved it up a couple splines......

I may have to agree with you Chase.
I did some more and it was no help.
Good news is the SC is at the alignment shop getting a "sneak it in" alignment done on short notice.

Bad news is I still need to tweak (adjust) the rear a bit to get it right where I want it and where Phil will be happy.

Safaris in, SC is washed and waiting on pick up this evening.

I install the tabs by drilling holes through them, setting them with zip screws then plug welding. Makes for a clean install.

Dash tabs are attached with stainless screws.
