Straight axle conversions and brake options

In my experience the rear brakes you use are directly related to the wheels you are going to run.

Thing brakes are GREAT for use with stock wheel as they supply enough offset for the wheel /tire to clear the torsion housing. Another option for stock wheels is a 4 lug Bug or T3 brake with a 4 to 5 lug adapter to get the extra clearance needed.

If you plan on running just about any after market wheel you can use either a 5 lug T3 brake, or you can modify the stock 5 lug Bus rear brake drum (36mm axle nut only) to work with a late model bug backing plate.

For Porsche pattern wheels I go with a 4 lug T3 drum re drilled with the Porsche 5 x 130 pattern, or a 4 lug T3 drum with a 4 lug to Porsche pattern adapter depending on the offset of the wheels being used.

i am running so cal rear 4 lug disk kit with 4 lug to porsche adapters with 1/4 spacers and a set 17 x 8.5 porsche twists with a 50mm off set. everything is tight but does fit.also used the same rear brakes with 4 to 5 lugs adapter to put 5 spokes and stock bus wheels on my double cab.

so.... i have ong axle long spline t3 axles...

been looking at a scat disc kit that is wide 5... would that clear me to run stock wheels and maybe run speedmasters later on???

i saw it in the scat order catelog but cant find a link... just wonder if it would work?

Any specs on how much needs to be machined from a small nut bus drum?

My bus is running Beetle brakes on the '68 Tranny.... Im currently running Thing drums but wanted to put on the Machined bus drums to tuck my back end in a little. Got a set that look nice, but they bottom out on the backingplate when you tighten the nut.

I think the lip on the back needs shaved down.

 How do people put the drum on a lathe to take the lip down? Because of the tapered snout The only way I figured was to use an axle stub and chuck it up and put the drum on with the axle nut holding it on from the inside of the drum.

My snout and rear lip are cut down, but I'll bet the remaining lip wasnt shaved down....
I'll have to make them work when I put my new tranny in.
