I just lost my enthusiasm on it right now. I have other stuff keeping me busy anyway. I'll get back on this when those cars are done.

RHD is on the top of my personal list right now, then this might get some love. At this point I'd rather buy another restored engine then mess with this one again...

Bought some cool stuff for the 356 in the last month. most of it should be picked up this weekend. Coolest thing, the bench front seat. It's even black and matches what's in there now, so no upholstery work to do. Each side still reclines individually but can be slid forward and back from one side or the other. new "bench seat" sliders with ball bearings for smooth operation Trans is in dry, no brakes, just 4 lug T3 hubs drilled for 5x130 pattern so I can roll it. I should have a set of extended spring plates done Friday. Waiting on tires then it'll be back on the ground rollin' Engine is still not on my "to do" list.

Throw in a motorcycle, a boat, and maybe a guitar and you have a deal.

As is the norm with me I have a tendency to loose direction if I get distracted. With that in mind, I pulled the 356 trans out and sold it last month. Instead I ordered a Pro Street Rancho unit so I know there will be no issues with breakage in the future if I go with big HP. Mike @ Rancho told me "you'll get it after the 1st" so I figure I'll start bugging him again Friday.
I'm going to keep the SC Porsche engine, but I can't bring myself to run it again. I have something up my sleeve but I don't want to let that out of the bag just yet.

Had a local place make me a 12v electric tach to go in place of the OG Pre-A tach I just bought.... Stock Pre-A goes to 6000 RPM My new one will go up to 8000 RPM with the correct redline sweet spot and work off the ignition, not the oil pump.

Speaking of high RPM's.... After everyone that would listen to me talk telling me the 100 hp+ 1720cc IDA'd engine was going to continue to break transmissions I decided to go for a "built" VW one instead. 3.88 Pro Street Plus with HD axles, etc... I did a bomb run to So Cal Thursday and picked up my new trans from Rancho as well as a few other stops along the way to pay for the trip (210hp+ 2332cc in the back ground came from Jay Cee. The price was right, I couldn't pass it up!)

Since I am waiting on some parts for Matt's 68 airbag deal I figured I'd sort out the install on the trans tonight. I had a plan so I had Rancho install one of their new ERCO Bus nose cones on the trans, and give me a spare to probably destroy during mock up.... Here's where it needs to fit. Using the same mount I use to put a tunnel trans into an early bus I got started. The mount hit the brake tee here... So I cut it away, decent fit now. The nose cone was hitting the hole in the body... So I hacked it off. Before After The nose cone was then hitting the body a bit, but a little "massaging" with a hammer and it's fine now. Hockey stick lines up perfectly! There was some other clearancing I had to do to the nose cone to clear the mount to body nut, but nothing to bad. I'll swap the modified nose cone with the one on the transmission, clean up my cuts to the brake tee mount as well as the mods to the nose cone and get it all bolted in over the next few weeks as I find time. Reverse lock out is my biggest concern at this point, and really it doesn't bother me that much.

Not that I will ever need to know this but, the pre A engines sit almost 2" higher than a bug? Or just the shifter is about 2" lower? Just trying to figure out why you needed the bus nosecone. Good job on figuring it out and making shit work.

It all has to do with the location of the shift rod / linkage. Most Porsche guys that do VW trans swaps run a shift rod on top of the tunnel, no offense to them, but I don't like the look. I like things to "look" stock. Having taken enough pre 59 buses, early bugs, and now pre a's apart. I recognized the front mount on the Porsche stock trans and aleady new what it would take to get a late tunnel trans to fit. Bus Porsche Early bug I already knew how to fit a tunnel trans into a bus, and split, as well as how to fit a Porsche trans into a split, so with a little reverse engineering I figured how to put the tunnel trans into a Porsche and keep the shift rod stock. That's all part of the fun for me. Figuring out how to make things work.

Already been done. Anyone can crash a NEW Porsche, takes balls to crash a classic. If you were in the hotel elevator the next morning that's what you would have expected my car to look like the way these two guys were going on about it.

By the start of the show it didn't matter. You would have never known, except for the people talking about it.
This is still my favorite car.

Thanks. It's in my top 3. You're right about people not knowing. I had more than one person come up and ask, "I thought this got wrecked"

I'm trying to make more room for Jeff's 15 window, and I had some free time tonight, so I finished with the trans mount. One thing I didn't notice earlier is the 356 uses 10mm studs and the mount and adapter both have 12mm. I took some steel tubing *about* the right size and made a couple bushings. Two for the nose cone to adapter bolt holes, and two more for the adapter to car holes. I could have used an early Bus nosecone, but I already modded the new one and didn't want to do another, plus this was quick and easy. All set now.
Tomorrow I should have the trans in, wheel back on, and have it rolling again. If I have time I'll bolt up some other stuff too.
Pictures tomorrow for sure!
