 thinking
Has any one done the YOM plate thing recently? what do you need to take to the DMV? Is it just the one form 352?
Do they want my current plates that are on the car?
I have looked at some web sites, but i want to here from vw guys on the steps to take to make this happen with the least amount of stress and hassle, Thanks

To avoid stress / hassle call ahead first to make sure your plates are clean.
Here's the direct number I use - 1.800.777.0133

If they are "clear" take them into the DMV. I never fill out any forms I let them do that as they will want to measure the plates, etc.
Eventually they will want the plates that are on your car, but not until the office in Sacramento makes sure everything is up to par.
I *think* you will run your regular plates until you get a call / letter that your YOM plates are good to go.

I've honestly never done this with a car already registered / plated, so I always got the red registration tag to use until I got a letter.

racerx45 just went through this on his T34 I'm sure he'll have some input.

I just registered my 60 Ragtop it came from Oregon so I needed new plates and a Vin check. I brought my 56 series plates down there.
The lady was super nice.Said they were clear, used the copy machine to make copies of the plates. I did read up on it before I went down there and had the correct 1960 registration sticker on the rear plate. She told me it would take about 8 weeks for Sacramento to approve them. Here is a link that has much info on the whole process.

I am a little late to reply on this but can add what I went thru.

My car came from AZ. So I had to do the vin check and then registration. I had the black and yellow plates that had been on the car when it was in CA roughly 10 years ago so I knew they should be clear, they were. I was given a temp permit that was good for 2 month, this was May 12th. The lady said should take 6-8 weeks and if I did not have the new tags and pink slip in 7 weeks to call and check because I would need to get a new temp permit if they had a delay. So to cut to the chase I finally got them at the end of Oct., yes almost 6 months. I was told the delays were due to the furlough days.

The helpful tips I can give you are when you call in to find out what the status is they will pass you over to the special vehicle registration department save the number (itís a 916 number and I did not keep it after I was done, my bad). After you have it you can just call that number for help. If you call around 6 weeks and tell them thatís what they told you to do at the DMV office to check and be very polite they can be helpful. I was able to get them to send me a new temp permit in the mail so I did not have to go back in to the office. This was helpful but it was only good for one extra month, you should ask them to give you one good for 2 months just in case. The lady that was helping me had to check on this with a manager to make it happen so it still took a few phone calls, but is better than having to go into the office. Other than that just be patient and maybe youíll be lucky and it will only take 12 weeks not 20 something.

 :banghead:Thanks guys,
I went in with every thing in order at the end of November, received my temp permit and was also told to expect a 6 to 8 week turn around time. Had to go back yesterday to get a new temp permit and was told that they have not even started to process my application. I'm sure it will be worth it in the end, to have a nice set of 56 plates on my ragtop.

Just wrote a check for a set of black plates for my bus. They have never been mounted and are still in the dmv envelope. Not cheap but should be a great finishing touch.
And they start with S which is the right sequence for 66.

Nice.
Did you check with DMV to make sure they were clear first?
I'm having a heck of a time finding a clear set of 47 base plates right now.

I bought them from a guy on ebay that guarantees them clear till october  or he'll send me a new set. He has perfect feedback and I talked to him on the phone. I called they are clear.
I get nervous spending alot of dough on something like this so I think I got my bases covered.
They are going to look nice on my bus. I am getting closer to getting it on the road. BTW what are 47 base plates?

Base plates are what you start with.

New plates were made in 1945, 1947, 1951, 1956 and 1963

Metal tabs or stickers were used for the years in between the new base plates

1946 California License Plates used a 1945 base plate with a metal 46 tab

1947 California License Plates were a new base plate

1948 California License Plates used 1947 base plates with metal 48 tabs
1949 California License Plates used 1947 base plates with metal 49 tabs
1950 California License Plates used 1947 base plates with metal 50 tabs

1951 California License Plates were a new base plate

1952 California License Plates used 1951 base plates with metal 52 tabs
1953 California License Plates used 1951 base plates with metal 53 tabs
1954 California License Plates used 1951 base plates with a metal 54 tab
1955 California License Plates used 1951 base plates with a metal 55 tab

1956 California License Plates were a new base plate

1957 California License Plates used 1956 base plates with 1957 sticker
1958 California License Plates used 1956 base plates with 1958 sticker
1959 California License Plates used 1956 base plates with 1958 sticker
1960 California License Plates used 1956 base plates with 1960 sticker
1961 California License Plates used 1956 base plates with 1961 sticker
1962 California License Plates used 1956 base plates with 1962 sticker

1963 California License Plates were a new base plate

1964 California License Plates used 1963 base plates with 1964 sticker
1965 California License Plates used 1963 base plates with 1965 sticker
1966 California License Plates used 1963 base plates with 1966 sticker

1968 California License Plates used 1963 base plates with 1968 sticker
1969 California License Plates used 1963 base plates with 1969 sticker
1970 California License Plates used 1963 base plates with 1970 sticker - Commercial only

I love being right.......

Back when I was doing the brown '50 hardtop I got a set of YOM plates for it. When it sold I kept the plates and "saved" them with the DMV (paid $40 to own them or some BS)
Next I was going to put them on the blue '50 but obviously never did.

Anyway, fast forward to today. I walked in to the local DMV with my paperwork to "re-assigned" the plates to my 11G, paid $52 and walked out with legal registration, no waiting to clear, no red sticker in my window for 9 months, no hassles, and the somewhat cute (for DMV standards) girl behind the counter offered to kiss me for making her job so easy.  oops

If you plan on running plates on more than one car (ie. run them until you sell it then put them on the next project), do this.

When you sell the car you can "retain" the YOM plates (check with your local DMV for the form)

'51 plates?

'47 plates with a '50 corner tag.

Same plates, different car.

or, am I missing something?
