Alex just picked up a Thing. It's getting dropped off Friday. First order of business, narrowed, dropped, Porsche pattern brakes, and Cosmics.

Should be a quick fun project. He's col with waiting for the Vendo to get done then it's all about him. that will give me time to collect the parts needed build everything so once I get started it'll go fast.

Alex stopped by last night to check out his car. There are a couple mechanical issues to be handled as well, but for the most part it's just getting a drop and new brakes.

I'm doing a 2" beam this week, dropped spindles with 5 x 130 (Porsche) disks in the front and re-drilled 5x130 drums in the back.
Adjustable spring plates, lowered shocks all the way around.
New Cosmics form CIP1 with 145/65's in the front and 195/60's in the rear.

Per Alex's request I got a set of 145/65's for the front and mounted them up today. I'd have a picture, but there are balls of ice falling out of teh sky right now and I'm seeking shelter....

I'll get some later. Still waiting on the rears to arrive, matching Conti's of course.

No problem. I'll get a full set before I pull anything apart.
Beam is done (cut down an OG to keep the needle bearings) spindles / brakes / spring plates are here as well.
Waiting on Porsche pattern drums and LOOKING for a set of good BJ arms so Alex can keep his stock beam complete.

I want to have everything lined up so it'll go quick once I pull  it apart. No waiting on parts and having a car dead in the water in the shop.

I had visions of grandeur tonight...

My plan was to do some after hours work on the Thing and get all the running gear out so I could stuff the new stuff in this weekend. Before I had a chance to get started Alex made a surprise visit / stop by and we ended up going over a bunch of other details on the car and talking about some other projects on hand. Time got away, it was time for dinner, and the only thing accomplished was, well nothing really.... But Alex and I did get a chance to catch up a bit and share some thoughts on his car so it was time well spent.

The Thing will be waiting for me tomorrow morning I'm sure, still in the same spot waiting for a make-over.

Slamming a Thing is cool.

I don't think your "2 cents" worth of input holds any value in this discussion.

We can still be friends though, right?

With the jobs in front of Alex's thing *officially* done this morning I jumped on the Thing after lunch.
I currently have a bed full of wheels / tires and suspension parts from him  to pick up.

Beam is in, spindles are on, tie rods are on, steering box and new dampener are on.

I used a drilled 4 lug rear drum to gauge the true spacing I was going to need in the rear to make things fit right. with the skinny drum the wheel gets lost in the fender (plus the shout ticks out through the wheel center) so I am going to try a few other trick tomorrow ad go with what works best. I'll post what I learn.

While I was in there I saw that new shoes in the rear will be in order, as well as new hoses. Those will get handled tomorrow as well.
I plan on driving it to the alignment shop Monday.
Aside from the drop we are doing some engine / clutch work as well. But that will happen after the drop is done. When I pull the engine I'll replace the trans mounts too. The rear ones, I can see, are totally separated so now is the time.

Pictures??

Yeah, I'll get some tomorrow!

Here we go... First of all, my shop is TERRIBLE for taking pictures. It's a shop, not a photo studio.

New lowered ball joints, steering dampener, narrowed tie rods, dropped spindles, steering coupler, brake hoses, and don't half step, ream the tie rod hole so the end can be flipped for more clearance.

Added the backing plates, and calipers to get an idea of what I was working with (yes I knew I would have to remove the caliper to install the rotor)

New races, bearing,s and seals into the Porsche pattern rotors, Followed by new thrust washers, and pinch nuts.

Added the new lowered BJ shocks, and the front is on the ground.

No good shots of this, but if the rain lets up for a bit I'll get some outside tomorrow.

I also install Alex's military bumper (is that right Alex?)

Pretty straightforward as the holes were in the bumper ends already.

When I looked inside to make sure I wasn't going to drill into anything, I find captive nuts and a brace there as well.

Drilled a pilot hole through the center of each nut then a bigger one from the outside once I knew where I was at. From there it was a simple "bolt-on" situation. I'll get new hardware for it later.

The rear has shown me some problems.
First was the spacing on the wheels along with the snout on the drums.

Re-drilled late stuff looks nice, but the wheel is too "tucked" in the rear, and the axle nut sticks out too far.

So I opted for 4 lug stuff with a 4 to Porsche adapter. This is cheaper than buying a $200 set of 1" Porsche to Porsche spacers, and if you have the right brake set up it does the same job.

<no picture of that apparently>

But it did push the wheel out, and fix the axle nut issue

Here's a tip. IRS stuff is like a long splined swing axle. when using short snout drums, you need to run a spacer, or you run out of threads before the drum is tight. Have a closer look and you'll see that you also bury the axle nut down past the cotter pin hole as well.

With the correct spacer your drum get tightened, AND you can utilize the cotter pin hole.

While I was inside I noticed the need for new shoes, and new axle seals won't hurt either.

The next issue is the spring plates. I wanted to go with adjustable plates, but apparently no one makes a "Thing" adjustable plate, so I'll have to modify these tomorrow when I notch them.

Notice the 3 hole locations are different n the stock and new ones. not a big deal, just another hurdle and lessone learned.

Also on the list....

New Thing style exhaust to replace the probably going to be too low one on there now...

Replace some missing engine tin...

and fix this fuel line that was causing A LOT of fuel to leak out (it broke off when I touched it, VERY brittle)

The whole engine is going to come out and get a once over, as well as  check out the clutch and replacing of the tranny mounts.

But all that is down the road once it's lay'd out and driving again.

One thing at a time.

Talked to Alex regarding the ride height he wants and I will be making some adjustments today then rolling it out in the SUN for some pics. Then getting it aligned. Once all that is done I'll get to the engine work / details.

I will say, working on this has made me want one again.

Terrible shot of the new improved spring plate while I was working on them again today to get more "tuck" out of the rear before bottoming out.
I also notched part of the control arm, and removed the lower bump stop mount. It has about 1 1/2" of travel in the rear right now.

Here's what I ended up with....

Little bit of camber in the back too...

Not many pics I know. It's in "non runner" mode with the fuel line broke in the back so I was pushing and having a hell of a time I might add.
More so than I should of been having, so I decided that was enough pics for today.

Once I *finally* got it back inside I found the culprit.

Cosmics were rubbing on the caliper, I thought maybe it was the disk set up I chose, so I tried them on a few other disk brake cars, and they were all the same.... You'd think the people making the wheels would at least make sure they cleared a caliper...

Easy fix with a 3/8 spacer, but a pain to figure out. I'm glad it wasn't running, I probably would have "machined" the caliper down test driving it.
 oops

Engine is coming out now for a new clutch, trans mounts, and some other work. Not glamorous work, so I'll save the pictures of that and worry about a better photo shoot of the whole car when I'm done.
